About Me.
Hi, I’m Richard Small. I'm a Designer and Creative Director specialising in brand communication at global scale.
I joined Sony in 2008 and have progressed into my current role as manager and Senior Art Director for the Sony Design team. Today, I lead a team of creatives responsible for shaping visual communication across the brand — from global marketing campaigns and corporate identity through to product positioning, packaging, and retail experience.
My work sits at the intersection of brand, product, and culture. I operate across both global and local markets, translating complex technology into clear, compelling visual narratives. This has involved close collaboration with leading design agencies, production partners, and cross-functional teams across Sony’s diverse business landscape.
Over time, I’ve developed a broad, multi-disciplinary perspective that allows me to move fluidly between strategy and execution — from concept creation to final delivery. This versatility has made my role integral across multiple areas of the organisation.
Alongside my work, I’ve had the privilege of representing Sony at major design and branding events across the UK and Europe, including keynote talks at the D&AD festival and main event at Birmingham Design Festival, as well as delivering guest lectures at universities, sharing insights on design, brand, and creative leadership.
I graduated from University of Reading with a degree in Typography & Graphic Communication. That experience instilled a deep respect for the craft of typography and the foundations of visual language — shaping a practice rooted in detail, materiality, and clarity of communication.
Outside of my professional work, I maintain a strong connection to print and process — often found experimenting with letterpress and traditional techniques, embracing the slower, more tactile side of design.
